  • Condition: Board/Storage Box in very good condition with Very light wear from use and storage. Chess pieces in good condition. The black piece were painted and have paint wear on the edges from use and storage - see next to last photo. All the pieces have dust in the crevasses - not cleaned. Box lining in good condition, except for a tiny rip in the purple lining on the middle front edge - see last photo. There's also a tiny stain on the white lining. Please look closely at all the photos for the condition details and judge for yourself. Please ask questions if something is not clear.

    Description

    This is a Vintage Soapstone Hand Carved Chess Set
    in a Portable Storage Case with an Inlaid Stone Board.
    Maker and country of origin not marked anywhere and
    exact age unknown. However, from other sets I've seen,
    this set was probably made in India.
    The case is made of solid wood, Oak, I believe, and the bottom
    is a veneer. The top of the case has a stone inlaid chess
    board. Not sure what the stone is. It is very well made. The
    hinges are brass and the clasps, on the front, are steel. The
    inside is lined with padded cloth. The Case is 8" square and
    with the pieces inside, it weighs just over 2 Lb.
    The chess pieces are hand carved stone which I believe
    is Soapstone. No two pieces are exactly alike. The pieces
    vary in size. The Kings are about 1 3/4" tall, The Queens
    are about 1 1/2" tall, the rooks are 7/8" tall and the Pawns
    are just about 3/4" tall.
