Table of Contents
Chess player
Schuster won the Württemberg championship eight times, for the first time in 1933 at the age of 22. Between 1948 and 1959 he took part in German championships six times, his best result he achieved in 1951 in Düsseldorf with a shared fourth place. His greatest success came in 1952 when he won the Salsomaggiore Terme chess tournament in Italy before the later International Master Alberto Giustolisi. In 1960 he took part in the zone tournament in Berg en Dal (municipality Berg en Dal, Netherlands), where he only finished in the last place in the table.
Schuster was called up three times for international matches in the German national team. Apart from a competition in 1952 in Lucerne against Switzerland, he played at the European team championships both in the 1960 qualification in Stockholm [1] and in the final a year later in Oberhausen on the seventh board of the German team. [2]
Schuster was a member of the Stuttgart chess club SK Cannstatt 1880 and played with it in the 1974/75 season in the top German division, the then four-track Bundesliga. At the age of 83, he played for his club in the Württemberg league and scored 5 points in 6 games.
His best historical rating was 2524. This he reached in May 1952. [3]
Chess journalist
Schuster was a very productive writer of chess books from his vocational training as a book printer and publishing clerk. From 1949 until the end of his life, he reported every week for almost fifty years in the Schachecke of the Stuttgarter Zeitung. Some chess problems are known from him. He also published articles in many chess magazines, including in Schach-Echo.
For this work he was awarded the Media Prize of the German Chess Federation in Dortmund in 1984.
