BELOW IS SOME HISTORY ON HAAG DRUGSTORE
Julius was born in Germany, while Louis was born in Indianapolis. By the early 1900s, the brothers had four stores in downtown Indianapolis, all open seven days a week and within walking distance
. Shoppers and workers who commuted on the interurban system could make a quick stop either to or from work and shopping.
The Haag's got caught up in a Prohibition nightmare and were charged in 1920 for bootlegging.
Both brothers testified that all the liquor which they ordered was for medicinal purposes, which was allowed by law at the time. There were, however, 400 quarts of whiskey, 10 quarts of brandy and a quart of Vermouth on their shelves. Both testified that the clerks were cautioned that only people with There was something so reassuring about the quintessential neighborhood apothecary. A trip to the drugstore was more than just picking up a prescription or cold medicine — it was a place to sit at the soda fountain counter with a chocolate malt or actually talk to the pharmacist who most likely knew your name.
Haag Drug was just that place for many in Indianapolis residents.
Brothers Louis and Julius Haag opened their first drugstore at 802 Massachusetts Ave in Indianapolis in 1876. Their formula of high volume sales and buying directly from the manufacturer was a sound business model and which spawned the slogan, “Cut Price Drugs.” Haag would essentially have the market covered until its biggest competitor, Hook’s Drugs, came on the scene in 1900.
prescriptions by qualified doctors were allowed to purchase alcohol.
Most prescriptions for alcohol came with the directions of "take one tablespoon with quinine water or milk". Nearly half of Haag’s inventory of liquor was seized and ceremoniously emptied into the sewer by a U.S.
marshal. The brothers were sentenced to 18 months in a federal prison in Atlanta, Ga.
Julius Haag died of spinal meningitis a year after he was released from prison at the age of 62. His brother Louis followed a year later at age 57.
Nephew Herbert Haag operated the chain until 1929 when the 11 stores were sold to Keller Brock and Arthur Illingworth. By 1940, the company grew to 30 stores. William Harbison joined the partnership in later years.
In 1950, Sam Moxley purchased the chain with the help of financing by his brother-in-law and Haag Drug president, William H. Ball Jr., the grandson of one of the five Ball brothers who started Ball Corp. Moxley updated facilities and opened stores in suburban areas and across central Indiana, including the first self-service store in Muncie. These were drugstores in the sense that they carried pharmaceuticals, but they were also a one-stop-shop that included a camera store, hobby shop, perfume counter, notions, children’s ready-to-wear department and toy department.
William Ball also owned the popular Huddle Restaurant chain and the Embers Supper Club at 2034 N. Meridian St. Not so coincidentally, Huddle Restaurants were typically connected to suburban Indianapolis Haag Drugs.
During the Vietnam War, Haag Drug's conceived the idea of the “Hoosier Air Lift”. Each store had a list of items ranging from candy, soap, razors and paperback books which could be purchased as gifts to servicemen in Vietnam. In turn, Haag Drug Co. matched item for item and shipped the gifts overseas.
In 1979, Toledo-based Peoples Drug Stores purchased the chain, which then had stores in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Ohio. CVS eventually purchased the Peoples chain.
