THE GREAT GAME OF ANCIENT SCANDINAVIA
Long before chess came to Northern Europe, board games of skill were widely played, by Vikings, Britons, Laplanders, and in all the surrounding areas. Going by many names, and with local variations, “hnefatfl” featured a central king and his defending army pitted against a great mob of invaders.
In recent years, this classic game has had its rules standardized, and has become very popular once again. It is played in international tournaments, and is a favorite pastime of game fans around the world.
THE PIECES
The pieces are made of clear glass, with felted bottoms. The king is a fine glass crystal, mounted on his pedestal.
Size: the King is approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm) tall, 3 cm in diameter.
The remaining pieces are clear glass cabochons, 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter.
The pieces alone weigh approximately 10 ounces.
They are padded on the bottoms for enjoyable play, and protection of the playing surface.
THE PLAYING MAT
The playing mat is designed after the archaeological finds, with the decoration shown by Linnaeus of 1732.
It is made of high quality, durable vinyl, similar to many of the playing mats used in chess tournaments. It is washable and with basic care will last for many years.
Size: The mat measures approximately 14 inches on each side, with playing squares of 1¼ inches.
THE OFFICIAL COPENHAGEN RULES
The recent edition of the official tournament rules is included, known as the Copenhagen Rules.
While hnefatafl has been reconstructed from centuries of clues in ancient manuscripts, serious modern players have fine-tuned the rules here, to make the game stand up to modern standards of analysis.
PACKAGING
The set comes in a sturdy corrugated cardboard box, for use in storage and travel.
