Description
This chessboard can be played floor style, or upon a coffee table. The height of the table is right at 10 inches. So it's perfect if you wish to play as in authentic Japanese culture, or it can be placed on a coffee table, and you can then sit in chairs. It's very versatile. So here is the history of this chessboard
: Of course it is a Japanese style of board. I believe it to be from the late 1940's to mid 1950's. Many US servicemen brought them home from their service during the war and after. The design is absolutely superb, with the tapered legs and scalloped moldings around the chessboard top, and the type of woods used, make it elegant and graceful. The former chessboard top was a veneer wood chessboard. It was damaged and unrepairable. I loved the unique design -- as a have personally built around 100 chessboards and chessboard tables. Something new in chessboard design is very rare (It's all been done and done again so it seems). This chessboard was well worth my efforts. As a sidenote: My chessboards have been sent all over the United States, Via, Ebay., and other online sources. They tend to be on the higher end because of the highest quality woods and finishes (Exotic woods do not come cheap). They are also a great deal of work. That said, I love woodworking and the game itself. Currently, I think I have about 10 of my own chessboards and chessboard tables listed on Ebay as I write this.
So loving the design, It seemed appropriate to faithfully rebuild this chessboard. The original chessboard top was all veneer, the dark squares a simple mahogany, and a light wood that looked like Birch to my eye. The chessboard I have
re-created uses (solid wood and no veneer) German Beech for the light squares (a beautiful clear and very stable wood). It is largely the same color as Birch, but a much stronger and a more stable wood (much heavier as well). The original board used a very straight grained mahogany (dark squares). I found the most beautiful mahogany that I have ever seen to use for the dark squares. It is what woodworkers call "quarter sawn." That reveals any flame (or iridescent qualities) in the wood grain. It is highly unusual for mahogany to have anything other than straight grain. So what was used with this chessboard is a very rare indeed. The pop of light in the dark squares is unexpectedly beautiful. The wood grain fully exceeded my expectations.
PLEASE NOTE: THE TOP I FABRICATED FROM SCRATCH IS SOLID WOOD. IT HAS NO VENEER IN IT AT ALL.
The margins (also all solid wood) around the playing area are made of Sapele wood. Sapele wood is in the Mahogany family. However it is much much harder. The perimeter edging is also Sapele wood. All of the woods compliment each other beautifully.
The bottom structural area of this chessboard, legs and horizontal framework, is all original and in excellent conditon (it is also solid wood, no veneer). I refinished all of the supporting structure of this chessboard (excepting the very underside). The underside of the chessboard was unfinished. I applied four coats of finish to protectively seal the wood (on the underside). The chessboard top has 12 coats of lacquer upon it. I wanted a depth of finish to protect it for generations to come, and also to make the wood grain pop as it does. My intent was to restore this antique chessboard to it's former glory. I give credit to the wood grain as to how beautiful this turned out. I think the wonderful wood I used made all of that possible. As a sidenote: I am always aware that God grew the trees that has given humankind the ability to create beautiful things out of His own creation.
Lastly,
It would be quite an experience to know this chessboard's history, it's travels, it's owners through the decades, and all of the hands that played this beautiful game. I can imagine it has seen many...
