House of Staunton 4.4” Collector SeriesChess Set.
This superb chess set was issued by thevenerable House of Staunton as a tribute and recreation of the originalStaunton design first issued in 1849.
Before 1849 there was much dissent amongthe world class players over which design of chess pieces should be used forinternational tournaments, each country having its own favored style.
A certain Nathaniel Cooke in Englanddesigned and patented a style of chessmen and persuaded the then currentlyrecognized world champion, Howard Staunton, to endorse the design (no doubt forsome compensation). This design was then soon recognized as the only acceptablestyle for tournament play the world over. This is still true today.
As a tribute to this event, the House ofStaunton issued a premium quality chess set in the exact same design.
It is this set, in the large 4.4inch King“Club Size” that is offered here.
The set was purchased directly from theHouse of Staunton a few years ago and has never been played

it has spent all its time in a closed air-conditioned display cabinet.
The king is 4.4” high.
All pieces are in “as new” condition, heavilyweighted and felted and have the very stable wide bases.
The pieces are made from premium qualityebony and boxwood. The finish is absolutely beautiful.
It was customary at the time the designfirst appeared to mark the King’s rook and knight with a small stamp in red

precision cut in the bishops. The kingshave the House of Staunton logo under their bases.
The set is housed in a beautiful mahoganybox, with felted interior and high quality quadrant hinges. The box is completewith functioning lock and key.
Underneath the box is the certificate of authenticity bearing theoriginal code number.
The set will be shipped in a custom fitStyrofoam carton and enclosed in an outer shipping container.

Myfather built his collection of chess sets with pride over many years and caredfor each set meticulously. But now, sadly, with advancing age, he has decidedto part with his prized sets for others to enjoy.
