This coin is the first in a series of seven that will honor Malta's prehistoric monuments that are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
The Ggantija Temples complex in Gozo is one of the best preserved on the Maltese islands. The site dates to 3,600-3,200 B.C. and is one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. Ggantija was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
The obverse shows a representation of the Ggantija temples. The reverse carries the common design for the 2 euro coin.
The €2 commemorative coin has only been issued with a low limit of 410,000 coins (350,000 uncirculated in rolls, 30,000 in the BU sets and 30,000 in BU quality packaged in a coin card) and has 3 different varieties. The first has no mint marks at all and has only been issued in rolls. This is the coin that you will receive. The second carries the mint mark of Monnaie de Paris and can be found in coin cards, as well as one thousand BU sets. The third has the unique Maltese mint mark F and are only available in the remaining 29,000 BU sets.
